Malachi 4
1. "For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, and all the proud,
yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn
them up,'' says the Lord of hosts, "that will leave them neither root nor branch.
2. But to you who fear My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing
in His wings; and you shall go out and grow fat like stall-fed calves.
NKJV
Some of life's experiences can be very difficult to cope with. Some days can feel
like a burning oven. But this verse says that one aim of difficult but vital days
is to root out two main things from us: pride and wickedness.
Pride means having unwarranted feelings of self importance about myself or my group.
This often works itself out in our daily life as arrogance, which is a superior
manner toward others who we think of as inferiors. It often encourages a critical,
self-righteous attitude, which does not reflect the attitude of Lord Jesus at all.
Proverbs 16 puts it this way:
18. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
NKJV
We set ourselves up for difficult days when we adopt a haughty and arrogant manner
towards others who are human beings just like us.
Pride unfortunately has other results also. James chapter 3 puts it like this:
16. For wherever there is jealousy or selfish ambition, there will be disorder
and every other kind of evil.
LB
This is why God will not tolerate pride, because it also fosters jealousy and selfish
ambition and opens the door for every other kind of evil. This does not reflect the
character of Lord Jesus either.
Prayer:
Father, if there is any pride, arrogance, self-righteousness, and haughtiness in
my soul, please purge it out of me, so that I can reflect the attitude of the Lord
Jesus in all I think, say and do.
Lord Jesus, I thank You for being willing to give up the glory of heaven and limit
Yourself to becoming a human being and dying a criminal's death on the cross, so
that You could include me in Your family.
I want my life to be a reflection of You,
Amen.
